Shimmer is a little bit of a diva, all things considered, and wants to be the prettiest person (or well, pokémon) in every situation, and try to coach Melaka and hers in the art of looking good. She has a tendency towards sparkling, which is where she got her name from, and from the moment Melaka fixed her up using a haphazard rod it's been true. These days, she has a strong ally in Lurks, who has opted to live with her, and they have a great friendship. Still, she's also recently learned the need to be a strong battler.

Melaka caught Shimmer out by the ocean while she was attempting to find a pokemon which could transport her out to the (at the time newly discovered) tropical island.  Instead... she found Shimmer.  Shimmer and her bonded for a simple reason - Shimmer thought that the ocean was an unbecoming stage for her.  In reality, the fact is that a lot of the other Finneons that Shimmer has spawned with look as elegant as her or better and she wanted to stand out. What she has insisted on is that she simple wanted to show the humans how beautiful she could be so that they might appreciate the splendor of the ocean.  As with all of Melaka's team she has started to train for battles, but she'd more fond of verbal sparring than anything else.

Because Shimmer needs to live in the water, she visits the rest of the team only when they want to come up to the edge of the water, unless they are exploring somewhere which has water for her to swim in.  Perhaps because of this, the only one on the team she has a defined relationship with is Lurks, who she tends to sass at.

Pre-9/6

Melaka fished up Shimmer out of the ocean on order to gain a means to get to the as-of-then nearly discovered Tropical Island.  Using an improvised rod and minimal bait, she needed to wait a long time, and in the end, given the size of Finneons, it didn't pan out.  Instead, Melaka got the first pokémon on her line up she literally didn't know how to work with due to the fact that Shimmer is relegated strictly to the water and she, herself, still cannot swim.  Despite this, Melaka did find the then-Finneon very pretty and named her for the way that her scales reflected the light off of them.  Shimmer, a somewhat vain but also quite diva-like pokémon by nature, accepted her clumsy trainer on this grounds and took up residence in the Habitat.

Despite the relative incompatibility between Melaka and fish in general, she's done her best to try to coach Shimmer from the outer edge of the pool, visiting her in the pokémon Habitat regularly.  While she has yet to really make it back to the ocean other than to assist in the boat-building project, she has also assured Shimmer that once they do it'll be her time to shine.  And while Shimmer can't throw a punch - for obvious reasons - the grace with which she performs the moves she has learned always dazzles Melaka.

None of the other pokémon on Melaka's team know her beyond a superficial level except for Lurks.  Lurks, in fact, moved into the water segment of of the pokémon habitat so that he could better and more regularly speak with Shimmer.  She finds Lurks to be a little cute - in personality, she finds his looks frankly more than a little revolting - and welcomes his company.  It was for this reason that while the mainstay of Melaka's heavy hitters were busy with that Gigas invasion in Caldera, Shimmer and Lurks trained together and evolved together in time to surprise Melaka when she got back.
