Gunther is both a key part of Melaka's team and somewhat independent of her. A shrewd business... pokémon. He's fairly independent creature, who found a job working at a little antique shop on the strip, selling useless items it's collected or can't be sold from the owner either to other pokémon or to trainers who can speak to them. He joined up with Melaka in order to get an in on the city life, and via training with her he's gotten much stronger over time, and can collect unique items from outside the walls, including material he can trade for his cigars.

Pre-9/6

Melaka met the Gunther during the Spring Fling fiesta of pollen and odd behavior from many people and pokemon.  As it turns out, Gunther was one of those pokemon acting oddly.   The Jigglypuff had come into Union with many others of his kind (mostly female ones, being one of the rare male Jigglypuffs) and was immediately taken with the city, wanting to enjoy all of the pleasures that he could find in it.  Melaka came upon him robbing people of their trinkets and candy, and bonded with him at the end of a chase.  As for the name: he actually named himself.  He pointed out the name in a newspaper.

But this was not the oddity: the oddity came in the fact that Gunther was in fact acting much <i>nicer</i> than his true personality at the time.  Once the pollen wore off, Gunther became even more interested in the city - taking to wearing vanity glasses and looking into more vices that he might enjoy.  Knowing that Melaka is his ticket to remaining here and building up a life here (or at least perceiving her as such, having been a wild pokemon until then) he trains with her and the others, but he is a breed apart from the rest of them.  When he isn't training or spending small amounts of quality time with them, he is out on the town doing Savior knows what.  None of them seem to know what he's doing, but he does put on a charming face for them, so they all allow it.
