8th Dusting

[Voice / Action]

[You know she almost, almost signed on for that one mission. A guard, surviving, she knew she could handle it. But then when she saw that "desert" thing. she has no idea what a desert is, so today she is at the library researching that, mostly because she really doesn't have much better to do today. She is clearly in a better mood though- all her earrings are in place (one of them she even thinks might be gold) and she she has a shiny nose stud in place. But... as she learns more and looks into these things more-

..Jesu.

She's gotten over being afraid of the sun (somewhat) in Luceti, mostly because of how dreary winter is, but that desert that... she flips open her journal]

Hey, Luceti. Talk to me 'bout the sun. Some of you got tales for it, right? Gotta.

[Feel free to answer her or see her in the library]

[As someone who did sign up for being a guard in the desert - California had its share - it's been on Giles' mind ever since.]

You mean, um, myths? Legends, and the like? Or, um, personal stories?

[He ponders this for a while, before:]

In ancient Greece, the sun was a god who drove a chariot of flaming horses across the sky. He had a son, who's mother was the ocean.

And that wasn't even the oddest coupling in ancient Greece, at least as far as gods were supposedly concerned.

I should probably ask if you know what a horse is, first. I know we have some in the village.

[Her vision is not terribly far off in terms of Helios' chariot, then.]

Basically, yes. Ponies are horses, not all horses are ponies. Still, yes. Same basic shape.

A chariot is a wheeled vehicle that could be hitched to two horses. It generally had enough room for two people to stand inside of it, and was often used for gladatorial combat and violent races at the time and for several centuries after. But not, um, in this case. The chariot, while Helios was in it, was the sun. The horses were simply responsible for drawing it on its designated path around the world.

Two or more people fighting to the point of serious injury or death for the amusement of a crowd, particularly a watching ruler. Different from a standard tournament or contest in that gladiators often had some sort of criminal background, which generally landed them in the arena to start with.
